What Does Beach Casual Attire Mean?

The event you're headed to requested guests wear "beach casual attire." What's that mean? Like many dress code guidelines these days, the meaning of "beach casual" is a little bit in flux, but in general, beach casual means comfortable clothes made of linen or cotton; pastel or neutral colors like white, yellow, or khaki; and open-toed shoes — or, sandals. But the best guidance comes from knowing the crowd you're going to be hanging with. Word-of-mouth can let you know if you'll fit right in wearing a Speedo, or stand out in the wrong way.
Beach casual contrasts with "beach attire," which typically means swimsuits and little else. You might wear your swimsuit to a beach casual event, but with an extra layer or two to go with it. Men should most likely wear a comfortable shirt, but one with buttons. For women, a sundress or a long flowing skirt will most likely check the "beach casual" box.
If you're throwing an event rather than attending one, as you can see, a term like "beach casual attire" might throw your guests into confusion. "Resort casual" or "tropical semiformal" or another term like that could give them more of a hint.
Or you can always just tell your guests: dress for the beach, but please, wear a shirt. If that's your preference.
What Is Beach Casual Wedding Attire?
You got the wedding invite, and it says "beach casual." Well, what's that? What is beach casual? Haven't you learned enough levels of formal and casual wear already? Can you wear shorts?
Well, again, it really depends on the wedding. But most likely, the wedding party and guests will not be in swimsuits or board shorts. The beach is probably going to be warm, especially if it's a wedding in the early afternoon, so breathable fabrics are a must. For women, dresses in bright colors or with formal prints should work. For men, a button-down shirt in a bright color with chinos is a typical look. But check with the groomsmen. If they're in shorts, you definitely can be.
What About 'Beach Formal' Attire?
Beach formal attire is still formal, but scaled back just a touch. Men, instead of a tuxedo or dark suit, will most likely be wearing a linen suit in light, summer colors like blue or khaki. And The Knot, who should know, says that "an elevated maxi dress is an appropriate option for women, so are high-low and midi dresses or a classy jumpsuit or pantsuit."
