Folding a Long Sleeve Tee

There a few methods for folding a long sleeve T-shirt. No matter what method you prefer, they all can help you get your long sleeve tee off the back of the chair and into a drawer without it taking up too much space.

First method for folding a long sleeve T-shirt:

  1. Lay the T-shirt facedown and flat
  2. Fold the arms across diagonally
  3. Fold in the sides lengthwise so they meet in the middle
  4. Fold the shirt width-wise into thirds

Second method (the KonMari method):

  1. Lay the T-shirt facedown and flat
  2. Fold the shirt in half lengthwise so the sleeves match each other
  3. Fold the sleeves across together
  4. Fold the sleeves down once more at the elbow
  5. Fold the shirt in half width-wise

Method No. 1 for folding a long sleeve tee

1. Lay the T-shirt facedown and flat

Set the shirt on the bed or on the floor. Smooth it out as best as you can. Keep it facedown so you can still see which long sleeve shirt it is once it's folded, in case you have more than one long sleeve tee in the same color.

2. Fold the arms across diagonally

Pick a sleeve and fold it across first. Angle it so that the long edge of the fabric remains as straight as possible. Fold the other sleeve over the first one at the same angle.

3. Fold in the sides lengthwise so they meet in the middle

Include the sleeves in your fold, and try to keep them pressed against the folded section of the main body of the shirt. Because of the sleeves, the shirt is not going to be perfectly, 100% flat as you fold it, but the key is to keep a roughly straight line down the middle where the two sides meet.

4. Fold the shirt width-wise into thirds

First fold up the bottom third so its edge lands roughly in the middle of the remaining section. Then fold that over one more time and you're done. You've made your long sleeve tee neat and compact, and it should fit in any drawer.

Method No. 2: The KonMari method for folding a long sleeve tee

Shoutout here to Marie Kondo, tidying-up expert. This T-shirt folding method requires a little more precision, so which method you use depends on how quickly you want to get the long sleeve T-shirt into a drawer.

1. Lay the T-shirt facedown and flat

Same as above: start by laying out your long sleeve tee shirt on a flat surface, such as the floor or a table.

2. Fold the shirt in half lengthwise so the sleeves match each other

Pick a line right down the middle of the shirt lengthwise and fold along it. The sleeves should sit right on top of each other so you can't really see the bottom one.

3. Fold the sleeves across together

Hold the sleeves together and fold them across the body of the T-shirt. The most natural fold should be at a diagonal angle. The sleeves will extend past the rest of the shirt. You'll fix that in the next step:

4. Fold the sleeves down once more at the elbow

Right where the elbow of the sleeve is, fold the sleeves across and down the other way, so that they lie flat and contained within the rectangle of the folded body of the shirt.

5. Fold the shirt in half width-wise

Keep a hand in the middle as you fold the bottom half up, so that the sleeves don't move too much. Again, the shirt won't be perfectly smooth because of the sleeves, but the edges of the shirt should line up as closely as possible.
